EMA Monomer Guide: What Nail Techs Should Know

What is monomer?

Monomer (nail liquid) is the liquid you mix with acrylic powder to make the bead you sculpt with. The liquid controls how your acrylic flows, sets and holds.

EMA vs MMA

Professional nail liquids use EMA (ethyl methacrylate). Some cheap liquids use MMA (methyl methacrylate), which many US states restrict for nail use because it bonds too hard and is difficult to remove. Always check that your liquid says EMA.

Signs of a bad nail liquid

  • Sets yellow over time
  • Lifting and popping off
  • Very strong, harsh smell
  • Too watery or sets too fast, so beads are hard to control
  • Brittle sets that crack

What to look for

  • EMA formula, clearly labeled (no MMA)
  • A Safety Data Sheet you can read
  • Smooth beads that are easy to control
  • Made to work with the powder you use

2Cute EMA Monomer is an EMA formula with no MMA, per its Safety Data Sheet. It comes in 8 oz and 16 oz bottles and is made to use with 2Cute acrylic powders.

Storage and safety

  • Monomer is a flammable liquid: keep the cap tight and store away from heat, sparks and open flame.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing the vapors.
  • Avoid skin and eye contact; wear eye protection.
  • Pour only what you need into a dappen dish; do not pour used liquid back into the bottle.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
